Upgrading your consumer unit ensures your home or business meets current BS 7671 18th Edition wiring regulations, with full RCBO and SPD protection as standard. All work is Part P notified and fully certified.
Here are some of the most common questions we get from new customers. If yours isn’t covered, get in touch.
Most consumer unit upgrades are completed within a single day. The power will need to be off for the majority of the work, so we aim to have everything back on and tested before we leave.
Yes, the power will need to be isolated for the duration of the installation. We work efficiently to minimise disruption and will always confirm the expected timescales with you before we start.
Yes. A consumer unit upgrade is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NAPIT-registered contractor, Nash Electrical handles all notifications on your behalf and issues the correct certification on completion.
A fuse box is an older style unit using rewirable or cartridge fuses. A modern consumer unit uses circuit breakers and RCDs or RCBOs which offer significantly better protection and automatically trip in the event of a fault rather than requiring a fuse to be replaced.
Yes. We install individual RCBOs as standard, providing both overcurrent and residual current protection on each circuit. We can also advise on Arc Fault Detection Device (AFDD) protection where appropriate for enhanced fire safety.
An SPD (Surge Protection Device) protects your electrical installation and connected appliances from voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes or switching surges on the network. The 18th Edition of BS 7671 now requires surge protection to be considered on all new consumer unit installations. Nash Electrical will assess your property and advise whether an SPD is required or recommended as part of your upgrade.
